I'm a flower farmer in the Pacific Northwest, a longtime traveler, and living proof that you don't have to be an expert to get started.
Every spring I plant thousands of dahlia tubers. In winter I watch snow geese, hundreds and sometimes thousands in a single field, lift off all at once. It's loud, unexpected and magical, like music in motion. I've also stood knee-deep in an Alaska river with a handful of other photographers when a salmon run came through and the brown bears charged past us after the fish, so close we could smell them. They didn't care about us at all. My heart was pounding and I was still trying to take pictures.
I'm not a perfectionist, and I don't write for experts. Hidden Trail Press is for people who are just starting out, whether that's growing dahlias, finding birds, or planning the trip of a lifetime. I'll tell you plainly what matters, what to skip, and what it's really like.
